ANCHOR: A San Diego college student was misdiagnosed by a doctor. The young man is now paralyzed. Today he has a multimillion award. But as M.G. Perez tells us, that won't compensate for what was lost.

M.G. PEREZ: That was then. This is now. Todd is 25-years-old and paralyzed from the waist down. It started on Easter Sunday two years ago while he was a phys ed major at San Diego State and came down with fever and back pain.
TODD ISEMINGER: I knew I was sicker than I've ever been. And I just was hoping that they could help me, which I think you usually do when you got to a hospital. You go looking for help.
M.G. PEREZ: Instead of help, Todd Iseminger got a misdiagnosis at Kaiser Zion Hospital where doctors said he had the flu and sent him home. The next day he returned paralyzed with what turned out to be an infection that caused permanent damage to his spinal cord. An arbitration panel has awarded him and his family $3.1 million in a malpractice suit against the Kaiser Foundation Hospital Group.
CRAIG MCCLELLAN: It will at least ensure that he gets proper medical care in the future, that he has some replacement for the income that he's going to lose the rest of his life and that he has some recovery.
M.G. PEREZ: A Kaiser spokeswoman told us hospital officials don't routinely comment on malpractice cases. And so today, they didn't.
Todd plans to use the money for a new medically equipped house. He'll travel and go back to school and try to start over.
Did you ever give up hope or have you?
TODD ISEMINGER: It's real easy to do. But I just still think the human spirit is a little stronger than that.
