With summer just around the corner, now is a good time to get ready for summertime accident prevention. Warm weather and recreational activities are fun, but increase the likelihood of serious accidents and injuries too. Below, you will find four types of accidents and injuries that are especially probable during the summer months.

Swimming Pool Accidents
The term "swimming pool accident" applies to a wide range of injuries and accidents. Two of the most common are drowning accidents and slip and fall injuries. These accidents often involve young children, but are usually preventable.

To avoid drowning and other serious injuries, always pay attention to warning signs in swim parks. Never allow children to swim without supervision and avoid running or wearing slippery shoes on wet pavement around pools.

Firework Injuries
Man firework injuries involve children. Like swim accidents, firework injuries to children are often avoidable with adequate supervision.

Adults should also exercise caution when using fireworks. Always wait until the firework is completely burnt out before approaching it. To avoid a fire, clear brush, leaves, and other flammable items from the immediate vicinity surrounding the fireworks. Other safety tips include:

  • Keep a bucket of water near the fireworks
  • To not create your own fireworks
  • Never alter fireworks
  • Never relight a firework "dud"

Grilling Accidents
Grilling injuries are usually caused by a consumer error or product defect. If you plan to sue a grill over the summer, always remember to keep a fire extinguisher nearby. In the event of a fire, you must know how to use the extinguisher and cut off the grill's supply of gas. To avoid fires, always remove excess grease from the grill and never use the grill near flammable materials.

Drunk Driving Accidents
Drunk driving is a serious threat to motorists across the nation, especially during the holiday season and summertime. Even if you are a careful driver, others are not. During the summer (especially near holidays), watch for drivers how exhibit signs of DUI:

  • Weaving in and out of lanes
  • Driving under the speed limit
  • Erratic braking
  • Drifting over the center line
  • Abrupt turns & stops
