New Year's Eve DUI Accidents & Injuries

Posted By The McClellan Law Firm || Dec 29, 2014

New Year's Eve has earned the dubious honor of being the holiday with the most DUI arrests made by law enforcement. While many Californians revel in the exciting festivities, drunk driving accidents are almost guaranteed to increase dramatically.

Almost one in three people will be involved in a drunk driving accident at some point in their lives according to statistics. Not only that, but drunk drivers cause 40 percent of fatal car accidents. Your chances of being hurt in an accident caused by a drunk driver are much greater on New Year's Eve.

In 2012, 1,091 people were killed in drunk driving accidents between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This increase in accidents has been cause for Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) among other organizations to encourage party-goers to have a plan in place for any post-party traveling.

A survey conducted by MADD gives a shocking assessment of how prepared most are to make it home safely. The survey showed that 73 percent of those 21 and older had been to an event in which a person drove themselves home after consuming more alcohol than they should have. Behavior such as this displays how many people overlook the seriousness of drunk driving.

There are other alternatives for those who lack a designated driver. Some parts of California offer free or cheaper taxi rides to encourage drivers to call for a taxi rather than attempt driving themselves. Newer ride sharing services, such as Uber, have made getting a sober driver even easier and affordable.

Skipping New Year's Eve driving arrangements is not worth the enormous damage a drunk driving accident can wreak. Even if you are technically under the legal limit of 0.08 percent blood alcohol, you can still be rendered too impaired to drive. Don't take the risk-make plans ahead of time.

If you or a loved one was hurt or killed by a drunk driving, you need to take legal action quickly. The McClellan Law Firm has the experience and credentials to handle your personal injury case.
