Skateboarder Injured in City Heights Hit-and-Run
A skateboarder was struck and injured by a motorist in the San Diego community of City Heights late Sunday night. The driver fled the scene.
According to San Diego police, the accident occurred around 10:30pm near Euclid and Polk Avenues. The skateboarder was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. The driver did not remain at the scene of the collision, and police are currently searching for this person, who has been described as a female with long hair who may have been driving a white-colored 2000 Jeep Cherokee or Ford Explorer.
A 10News report on the matter stated that neighbors had surveillance footage from a video camera of the accident, but law enforcement had requested that the video not be shared with the media at this time.
When a driver leaves the scene of an accident, as in the case discussed above, this is often referred to as a hit-and-run. It is actually a crime to leave the scene of an auto accident that has caused property damage and/or injury, without first exchanging contact and insurance information with any other parties involved. Accidents of this kind also leave victims at a distinct disadvantage when they try to file insurance claims for medical care, property damage and other losses associated with the crash. Unless the driver can be located, the victim's own insurance policy will have to cover such losses (if the driver has the appropriate coverage).
Seeking Justice After a Hit-and-Run Accident
Details regarding the skateboarder's condition have not been released, but any traffic accident has the potential to cause catastrophic injury. This is particularly true for skateboarders, bicyclists and pedestrians, who are not protected by vehicles, airbags and seat belts like occupants of the automobiles that hit them. Broken bones, head trauma and severe cuts and bruises are probable, and a victim may experience debilitating injuries like internal organ damage or spinal cord trauma.
