Man Killed, Another Injured In Dump Truck Crash Near Temecula
One man was killed in a crash involving two dump trucks late in the morning on Thursday, February 9.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a dump truck driver was driving in the southbound lane on Los Gatos Road near Carancho Road when he brought his vehicle to a stop after experiencing mechanical trouble at about 11 a.m. The driver reportedly turned on his hazard lights and got out to inspect the truck.
Moments later, a second dump truck was travelling down the two-lane highway before it slammed into the back of the stopped vehicle. According to officials, the crash caused the trailer on the approaching vehicle to become unhinged and overturn, spilling the asphalt it was carrying across the road.
The driver of the approaching vehicle was seriously injured in the collision, and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Riverside County Fire Department. The driver of the stopped vehicle was knocked down an embankment by the collision. He suffered minor injuries and was transported to Temecula Valley Hospital to receive treatment.
The road remained closed for several hours as road crews spent cleared up debris and spilled asphalt. Officials are still investigating the circumstances that led to the crash.
